2. Family Camp Out  (August 20, 2010)
A night of outdoor adventure and fun as families camped out at the Cohen Woodlands on August 20, 2010. Activities included a cookout, group games, fishing and a dinosaur egg scavenger hunt. The night concluded with a hike, smore making and spooky storytelling. In the morning the co-sponsor Colchester Land Trust provided a large breakfast and a guided hike to the newly acquired property. Look out for more camp out’s in the future!

This is how we recreate!
4. This is how we recreate!  (2010)
Participate in the national “This is how we recreate!” campaign.  Coordinated by the National Recreation and Park Association, people are encouraged to print out a copy of the official sign and photograph themselves holding the signs in their favorite parks and during their favorite recreational activities.  After posting the pictures anywhere on the internet (such as Twitter, Facebook, Flickr, blogs or any other type of web site), send a link to your photo to july@nrpa.org .  Alternatively (or additionally), you can email it to our office, and we’ll post them in our online photo gallery.  You can print your own copy of the sign our web page: www.colchesterct.gov/parks .

Wildlife Photo Contest Entries
5. Wildlife Photo Contest Entries  (2010)
In celebration of Colchester’s recent designation as a certified Community Wildlife Habitat (CWH) by the National Wildlife Federation, Colchester Parks & Recreation and the CWH Committee are teaming up to offer a nature photography contest for residents of Colchester and surrounding towns.  Photos are expected to show ways in which Colchester is a wildlife-friendly community.  Selected entries will be displayed at this year’s “Colchester 57 Fest”, which is scheduled for Saturday, September 25, as part of the CWH Committee’s participation in the event.  All ages are welcome to participate, with submissions in one of four categories:

•     Birds, Mammals, Reptiles & Amphibians
•     Gardens, Plants & Insects
•     Wildlife-Friendly Habitats:  Food, Water, Shelter & Places to Raise Young
•     Scenic Colchester

Printed photos in 4x6, 5x7 or 8x10 formats may be mailed or delivered in person to the Parks & Recreation Office, 127 Norwich Avenue, Colchester, CT 06415.  Prints cannot be returned.  Alternatively, submissions may be emailed to photos@colchesterct.info or shared online at http://www.flickr.com/groups/colchesterwildlife.  Submissions must be received no later than September 1 and should include:

•     Photographer's name, contact information and optional age (if 18 or younger)
•     Category for submission
•     Photo title, where it was taken and an optional short description

Where in the World is Colchester P&R?
8. Where in the World is Colchester P&R? 
To take part, simply take a picture of yourself displaying a copy of the Colchester Parks & Recreation brochure in any interesting location, and submit it to our department (digital or hardcopy.) All submitted pictures will be posted on our website photo gallery. For each issue of
the seasonal program brochure we will submit a handful of particularly interesting submissions for inclusion in our brochure. All submissions that wind up in our brochure will receive a $10 house account credit to be used towards any Parks & Recreation registration. So, break out those cameras, get creative and have some fun! Be sure to take a copy of our brochure with you whenever you travel, as you never know when a great photo opportunity might arise…
